WAAS@60 Conference – A Planetary Moment (15-19/2/21)

As an elected-fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS), Prof. Koundouri participated at the WAAS@60 Conference – A Planetary Moment on 15/2 in a discussion on “Why WAAS? – Inventing the Future” and on 17/2 on “Leadership for Planetary Momentum”

In her speech she focused on the need to design a post-COVID era to align with the SDGs and the Paris Agreement. Public investments should be oriented toward sustainable industries and the digital economy and should spur complementary private investments. A major goal of the recovery should be an unprecedented commitment to reskilling and upskilling people, including the skills to prepare workers for the green (renewables, nature-based solutions and circular economy) digital economy. WAAS has a central leadership role to play in the relevant interdisciplinary capacity building for all stakeholders: researchers and scientists, politicians, policy-makers, businesses, financial institutions, civil society and most importantly the youth!

3.1.A. Leadership for Planetary Momentum

(15:30 – 17:00 CET)

This is a momentous planetary moment. It presents both a severe challenge and a rare opportunity to generate extraordinary planetary momentum. Both motivation and leadership are essential. The threat of pending crises provides the motivation. The leadership can come in many forms and from a wide range of stakeholders, as explored in the UN-WAAS project GL-21 in 2020. This session will focus on the potential role of WAAS and an expanding network of partner organizations as potential catalysts of that movement—like that which led to the birth of the UN system following two horrendous world wars or the unexpected end of the Cold War and nuclear arms race and led to the rapid democratization, unification of Europe, and birth of WWW as the first truly global social organization.
