Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, a Fellow of Academia Europaea and co-lead of the Academia Europaea Task Force on Environment, Sustainability and Climate (TFESC), was honored to participate in the Academia Europaea – HUN-REN Headquarters Interdisciplinary Workshop on Earth, Environment and Healthy Living, held in Budapest on 24–25 April 2025.
This high-level event, jointly organized by HUN-REN and the Academia Europaea Budapest Knowledge Hub, brought together leading voices from across the natural sciences, environmental research, and life sciences to foster deep, interdisciplinary dialogue on some of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change, food and water security, environmental degradation, and public health.
In her speech, titled “Integrated Assessment Models for Transforming Food Systems under Climate, Biodiversity and Food Security Threats: A Systems Approach,” Prof. Koundouri presented the role of systemic modeling in policy design and emphasized the urgent need to transform global food systems through integrated solutions that respect planetary boundaries while ensuring resilience, equity, and well-being. She also highlighted the work of AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria, and its leadership of FABLE Greece within the global FABLE Consortium, focusing on sustainable development pathways, agri-food system transformation, and biodiversity loss. The FABLE Calculator is used to model national food and land-use scenarios aligned with global sustainability targets.
