Day 3 of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS@65) Conference

On the third day (23/07/2025) of the World Academy of Art and Science WAAS@65 Conference, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri moderated a high-level session titled “Strategies to Address Job Security and Economic Inequality.”

In her opening remarks, Prof. Koundouri emphasized that growing job insecurity, widening economic inequality, and AI-driven technological disruptions pose serious threats to human security and social cohesion. She stressed the urgent need for comprehensive policy reform, inclusive and equitable technological transitions, and the development of sustainable labour markets aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Prof. Koundouri also presented key findings from the recent report:
Koundouri, P. et al. (2023). Twin Skills for the Twin Transition: Defining Green & Digital Skills and Jobs. Available here

The panel brought together distinguished experts offering critical perspectives on the future of work and economic justice:

  • Prof. Grigoris Zarotiadis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; ASECU) advocated for cooperative, public-purpose-driven labour policies that prioritise social well-being over short-term profit.

  • Prof. Randall Wray (Levy Economics Institute, Bard College) contended that full employment is not only economically feasible but imperative, arguing that the real cost lies in tolerating mass unemployment.

  • Azita Berar (Chair, UNRISD; former Director at the International Labour Organization) underlined the importance of governance in the technological landscape, asserting that societies must govern technology rather than be governed by it.

  • Dr. Daljeet Singh Gahle (International Atomic Energy Agency) drew attention to the multifaceted responsibility of governments, media, and individuals in addressing inequalities within the labour market.
