The 10th IAERE Annual Conference & 1st MED-IAERE Conference took place on 21st‐23rd April 2020 in Cagliari, Italy in a hybrid format.
The Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE) organised the 1st MED-IAERE conference to gather Environmental and Resource Economists who work on environmental problems in the Mediterranean area and reinforce cooperation to achieve an environmental and sustainable development in the Mediterranean.
On the 23rd April Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated in the MED-IAERE Keynote Policy Roundtable entitled “Which policies to address the water-energy-food nexus in the Med area?” The discussion focused on the most urgent environmental challenges in the Mediterranean area.
Prof. Koundouri emphasized the importance of connecting European Green Deal Implementation and Recovery & Resilience Plans’ Investments, with SDGs performance, as SDGs provide the most holistic and integrated blueprint available, that allows a science-driven implementation of the sustainability Transition. Prof. Koundouri highlighted that SDGs mostly covered by RRPs across Southern Europe (in terms of the number of stimulus measures and budget allocated) are not always those on which countries face the biggest sustainability challenges. Although several European nations demonstrate relatively poor performance on transforming food systems and diets and biodiversity goals, these challenges have received lower attention in national RRPs than those of other SDGs like green energy, electrification of transport, and energy efficiency measures.
