Fourth meeting of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Shipping and Ports

Our fourth meeting of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Shipping and Ports Initiative took place on Friday the 30th of October 2020. In this session, we focused on the Port of Piraeus. We truly appreciated all your inside views and comments. Our ultimate goal is to co-design a sustainable future vision and identify technological solutions and portfolios of financing tools that can support the identified pathways towards the future vision.

In this session, we had the opportunity to learn about the Port of Piraeus major challenges and ongoing innovative projects from three guest speakers, namely, Ilias Salpeas, Mayor’s advisor Municipality of Piraeus, who explained how the Municipality of Piraeus supports Green transition, Maria Loloni, Maritime Programme Manager EIT Climate-KIC, who presented the Systems Innovation approach for a circular, inclusive, resilient, zero-carbon maritime sector and Dimitris Spyrou, Consultant in the Strategic Planning and Marketing department of the Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA), who showed how the PPA can act as a catalyst towards a net-zero emission carbon footprint inside the port area.

Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) is working together with EIT Climate-KIC, the innovation community and local stakeholders (ATHENA RC, IOBE, NKUA, AUEB, Thalassa Foundation and the Municipality of Piraeus) on a holistic (systemic) approach, adding environmental and social dimensions (e.g. zero-emissions, circularity, community engagement) and supporting the position of PPA as a proactive and future-proof business and innovation hub. The project is named “Maritime Hubs Deep Demonstration: Transforming the Port of Piraeus into an Innovative, Net-Zero carbon, Circular, Inclusive, Resilient Port”

This is a multi-year collaboration programme with EIT Climate-KIC, a major European innovation agency and community trained on the climate emergency, which aims to support the transformation of the port of Piraeus to a green and innovative port, delivering high-quality services to the global value chain, driving economic prosperity, maintaining a healthy environment, and enabling thriving communities, through shared aspirations and collective accountability.

We are glad that our network is growing with more professionals. So far, our team is composed of representatives from the policy and the public sector (Special Permanent Committee of Environmental  Protection of the Greek Parliament , Athens Multinational Sealift Coordination Center, Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED), Ministry of Development and Investments, Municipality of Piraeus) and the business sector(Dimand SA, Lloyd’s Register, Rhoé), the academia, research and education (National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), Panteion University of Social & Political Sciences, Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), ATHENA RC, University of Piraeus, University of the Aegean, PRAXI Network), NGOs (Thalassa Foundation, ICRE8, EIT Climate-KIC, UN Global compact Greece), investment companies (SPOROS Platform), shipping companies (Optima Shipping Services S.A.), and port authorities (Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), Igoumenitsa Port Authority, Kavala Port Authority).

We truly appreciated all your inside views on the port-city interface. We worked in groups and discussed three topics, namely, the energy, mobility, and waste management sectors. Thinking out of the box, we highlighted some of the current trends (political, social, technological…), innovations, and market opportunities in the maritime sector which will support the maritime port community in creating smart, innovative and holistic solutions for sustainable shipping.

The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Shipping seeks to create synergies and explore opportunities, which will integrate social, economic and environmental benefits for the involved parties. To reach this goal, a clear vision needs to be co-designed in the next meetings.

The fifth meeting will take place on Friday the 27th of November from 3 pm to 5 pm. In this meeting, we will work on co-developing our common vision!
