4th Siena Conference on the Future of Europe

The 4th Siena Conference on the Future of Europe took place from June 8th to 10th, 2023 in Certosa di Pontignano, Siena (Italy) and it was organized by Vision Think Tank in partnership with the University of Siena and involved various think tanks and European political foundations. The conference focused on four key areas: defense policies following the Ukrainian invasion, the impact of war on the Green Deal and energy policies, Europe’s digital autonomy, and improving the relationship between EU institutions and citizens.

Professor Koundouri participated in a session titled “The Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Forerunners in Sustainable Finance: Enhancing the Efficiency and Effectiveness of ESG and Carbon Mitigation.” During her intervention,  Prof. Koundouri focused on methods and applications on for measuring ESG and SDG-based transformation for companies and asset portofolios

The session was chaired by Victor Mallet (Journalist for the Financial Times, commentator and author).

Discussants: Andrea Maffezzoni (CFO Banca Monte Paschi di Siena), Anastasios Xepapadeas (Department of Economics University of Bologna and Athens University of Economics and Business), Alessio D’Amato (Department of Economics and Finance, Tor Vergata University of Rome, and SEEDS), Phoebe Koundouri (Athens University of Economics and Business & Technical University of Denmark, President European Association of Environmental Resource Economists, Chair UN SDSN Global Climate Hub), Peter Vis (Senior Advisor at Rud Pedersen Public Affairs and European University Institute), Thomas Sterner (Professor of Environmental Economics, University of Gothenburg), and other participants. Rapporteur: Ilaria Dibattista, Mira Manini Tiwari.

The PSG discussed the regulation and execution of climate change mitigation measures that are being applied and will be applied in the EU and beyond for governments, financial institutions, businesses large and small, and for citizens and individual consumers. They developed five broad proposals that respond to the title question about improved effectiveness and address each of these audiences.

The conference aimed to bring together intellectuals, policymakers, journalists, historians, and visionaries to generate bold ideas and develop common solutions for current issues. It aimed to be an annual forum for dialogue, providing a less formal space to contribute to shaping the future of Europe.
