Professor Phoebe Koundouri was honored to deliver the keynote address at the 3rd Symposium on Open Science in Greece, organized by the National Initiative for Open Science (EPAE), which took place on December 10-11 at NCSR “Demokritos.” The event highlighted Greece’s leadership in advancing the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and the efforts of the EPAE Consortium to strengthen Open Science, while engaging policymakers to integrate Open Science into national strategies for the New European Research Area.
In her keynote, titled “The Role of Open Science in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” Professor Koundouri emphasized the transformative power of science and innovation in addressing global challenges. She also presented the SDSN Global Climate Hub (GCH) framework, which tackles complex sustainability challenges through five key innovations:
- Advanced Models: The GCH employs system-dynamics-based models to create holistic pathways for critical systems such as water, energy, and transport, incorporating input from civil society and non-experts.
- AI-Driven Infrastructure: An AI-powered platform manages large datasets, enabling updates, digital twin creation, and enhanced visualization for actionable insights.
- Socio-Economic Narratives: Economic modeling tools develop narratives that align social and economic factors with sustainability goals, fostering ownership among stakeholders.
- Transformative Engagement: The GCH uses technologies like VR, AR, and digital storytelling to enhance stakeholder participation and co-design solutions.
- Openness and Accessibility: Committed to Open Science, the GCH ensures data, models, and methodologies are freely accessible, promoting transparency and global applicability.
Professor Koundouri encouraged attendees to learn more about the GCH framework in the working paper “Innovating for Sustainability: The Global Climate Hub”.
