EXCEED Policy board members meeting, Trainers Study Visit and 4rth Transnational Project Meeting in Athens, 15-17 October 2025

From October 15–17, 2025, Sustainable Development Unit, Athena Research Center (AE4RIA) and HELMEPA proudly hosted the EXCEED Policy board members meeting, Trainers Study Visit and 4rth Transnational Project Meeting in Athens, gathering a vibrant community of educators, policymakers, project partners and maritime professionals to exchange insights and accelerate sustainable vocational education and training (VET) in the maritime sector. Day 1 kicked off at the Athens University of Economics and Business, where Policy Board members guided by Mr. Alessandro Guardagni, presented comprehensive SWOT analysis sessions across participating territories, setting the foundation for shared learning. Mr. Athanassios Tsagatakis, from the General Secretariat of VET Education and LLL delved into the VET landscape in Greece. In the afternoon, participants toured the iconic Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. The visit which focused on the sustainability, education and innovation aspects, included a tour of the innovative architectural building complex, created by the architectural firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), which houses the National Library of Greece (NLG) and the National Opera House (GNO). The group then had an interactive visit to HELMEPA’s Maritime Academy, where they had an overview of HELMEPA’s educational programs, including skills development opportunities for seafarers and shore-based personnel. Participants experienced navigating a vessel under various weather and traffic conditions for operational safety and environmental awareness. Day 2 opened with a powerful welcome from Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri with an insightful presentation of AE4RIA and its projects and Mr. Constantinos Triantafyllou who presented HELMEPA and METAVASEA, followed by inspiring presentations from Mr. A. Tsagatakis  from the Greek Ministry of Education, VET Secretariat and Mrs. K. Alexomanolaki from the Ministry of Labour. The day continued with the project partners involved in a well prepared “Talent Factory” workshop, and insightful project updates from the EXCEED coordinator Elena Romanini from Centoform describing the strategic planning for 2025. From ATHENA RC, Stavroula Samara and Hezal Dilan Sari presented the progress of the communication campaign on gender equality in VET education. The day concluded with a warm social dinner under the lights of historic Athens. Day 3 took participants to the Port of Eleusis, where we were welcomed by key stakeholders including the Port Authority, Hellenic Coast Guard, and HELMEPA. The day focused on the port’s pioneering wreck recycling efforts, shipping decarbonization strategies, and maritime innovation. Captivating presentations showcased emerging technologies, legislative frameworks, and people-centered initiatives like METAVASEA  addressing skills development in ship-repair regions. We were first welcomed by Chrysa Martini, Director of Premises and Infrastructure, 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture who gave a presentation on Eleusis Transformation: Mysteries of Transition. The seminar series for Ports and Marinas within the framework of the MENA MARITIME ACCELERATOR were completed successfully

The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), a member company of GROWTH FUND – The National Fund of Greece, announces that the seminar series, designed and implemented from May until October of 2023, in cooperation with the Sustainable Development Unit at “Athena” Research and Innovation Center and the MENA Maritime Accelerator network on sustainable development/ESG issues aiming to upskill Port Organizations, municipal port funds and marina managers from Greece, was completed successfully. The four (4) specialized seminars on sustainable development/ESG issues, adapted and targeted at port infrastructures and addressed to their administrative and operational staff, were implemented as part of the MENA Maritime Accelerator programme[1]. The thematic sections of the seminars were prioritized by the participants themselves through a specialized online survey, the results of which were validated during the MENA Maritime Accelerator introductory workshop. Information for the delivered seminars is presented in the table below. [1] The goal of the MENA Maritime Accelerator is to accelerate the green transformation of the maritime industry by supporting start-ups that will provide innovative solutions for the transition to Climate Neutrality and Resilience. Founding Members of the program are the Sustainable Development Unit at “Athena” Research and Innovation Center, Chrysalis LEAP, Cyprus Energy Agency, Cyprus University of Technology and Cleantech Bulgaria. Selected start-ups will be eligible to get funding from the ARSINOE H2020 project, the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund and the MENA Maritime Accelerator network of partners. On Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th of June 2023, the Matchmaking event of the MENA Maritime Accelerator took place at Piraeus Port Authority premises in Piraeus, Greece aiming at strengthening the interconnection between ports, marinas and maritime companies from Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Spain and the chosen start-ups, to promote innovative pilot applications. The matchmaking process is also enriched with start-ups relevant to climate resilience for shipping and ports coming from the BRIGAID Connect Association, a research driven incubator, co-lead by ATHENA RC and in which Prof. Phoebe Koundouri is a founding member, that turns innovation ideas into real climate adaptation solutions. A key component of the successful completion of the seminars was the high-level lecturers who provided a wealth of knowledge and experience. Among the Lecturers were Prof. Vicky Tsoukala (Professor, Director of the Laboratory of Harbour Works, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens), Prof. Harilaos N. Psaraftis (Professor, Department of Technology, Management and Economics, Operations and Supply Chain Management), Mrs. Efi Korma (Head Of Market Development Department at Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES)), Dr. Thalis Zis (Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce, Finance, and Shipping in the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT)), Mr. George Pechlivanoglou (General Manager of the Eunice group), Mrs Vera Alexandropoulou (Lawyer, MBA, Harvard University, LLM, Law, Heidelberg University, Vice President, Thalassa Foundation), Mr George Kremlis (Chair Bureau Espoo Convention. ICSD 2020 – Sustainable Blue Growth: Shipping and Ports (SDSN Greece session)

The International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) provides a forum for academia, government, civil society, UN agencies, and the private sector to come together to share practical solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). History In 2013, an ocean away from New York, a meeting was held in Dakar, Senegal, to find solutions to the complex challenges of sustainable development. Participants felt that a larger conference was needed to bring others into the dialogue, and thus in an auditorium at Université Cheikh Anta Diop, it was decided that the Global Association of Master’s in Development Practice programs would partner with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network to launch the first ICSD. The first ICSD took place in September 2013, followed by conferences in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Soon it was time for the 8th ICSD, hosted in New York City by The Earth Institute, Columbia University, and their Center for Sustainable Development. Why Attend? Professor Jeffrey Sachs says it best: This year’s International Conference on Sustainable Development will be the most important and historic yet! Not only will the science and policy be at the cutting edge; the conference will take place on multiple campuses around the world, making it a truly global event. ICSD will host students from around the world, top scientists, and world leaders from politics to government to the UN. I urge everybody interested in sustainable development – the great challenge of our age – to come to ICSD. Alas, space is limited, but we’ll pack in all that we can! Who is in the Audience? ICSD brings together professionals from the private sector, academia, government, and civil society, along with students from the world’s top universities. We welcome participants from all sectors and experience levels. Simply register and help us reach our target of 1,000! About the Organizers The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) mobilizes the scientific expertise of the Earth Institute to create tools and research that shape new solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, and to provide policy support – as requested by governments and development organizations – to address these challenges in the context of a global society. The Earth Institute, Columbia University, brings together the people and tools needed to address some of the world’s most difficult problems, from climate change and environmental degradation, to poverty, disease and the sustainable use of resources. The Global Master’s in Development Practice (MDP), an interdisciplinary graduate degree program, prepares students to better identify and address the challenges of sustainable development. MDP programs generally consist of two years of coursework in four intersecting disciplines—health, natural, social, and management sciences–combined with cross-sectoral field training. The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) aims to accelerate joint learning and help to overcome the compartmentalization of technical and policy work by promoting integrated approaches to the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world. The SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society.   SDSN Greece is hosting a session on Day 1, 21 September 2020 at 16.00-18.00 EEST.  Parallel 3B: “Sustainable Blue Growth: Shipping and Ports” The panel is composed as follows: Moderator:

Futures Literacy Lab on Maritime Hubs

On 24th and 25th October 2019, Prof. Andreas Papandreou, Vera Alexandropoulou and Mr. Spyrou attended a workshop on the EIT Climate-KIC Deep Demonstration in Turku, Finland. The aim of the lab was to envision the future of the ports participating in this process. In particular, it introduced participants to futures literacy; produced collective knowledge about potential futures of net-zero ports; and further activated this group of ports and their local networks to work on these issues.
